Cowboy Bebop is Getting US Live-Action TV Series Adaptation

Variety has reported that anime studio Sunrise and Tomorrow Studios are producing a live-action TV adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. Chris Yost (Thor: The Dark World) is set to write the script.

Producer Marty Adelstein (Prison Break) commented, “We are excited to work with Sunrise in bringing this beloved anime to the U.S. and global marketplace as a live-action series.” Adelstein continued, “The animated version has long resonated with audiences worldwide, and with the continued, ever growing, popularity of anime, we believe a live-action version will have an incredible impact today.”

Cowboy Bebop is a space-western anime that was created by Shinichiro Watanabe and produced by Sunrise. The series follows bounty hunter Spike Spiegel, his partner Jet Black, an amnesiac con-artist named Faye Valentine, the hacking genius Ed, and a genetically-engineered Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Ein. Together, they man the spaceship Bebop and chase criminals across the solar system.

The 1998 anime series was a global hit and has become a mainstay on American TV for [Adult Swim] and Toonami. A 2001 movie titled Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was also produced.

Sunrise originally planned on co-producing a live-action movie 20th Century Fox, which would star Keanu Reeves as Spike Spiegel. The movie has been in development hell since its 2008 announcement.
